The Garmin GPSMAP 723 is a 7" touchscreen chartplotter built to sit at the centre of a networked helm. It has no built-in sounder — sonar comes from a networked Garmin module — but it takes radar, connects to older NMEA 0183 instruments and runs on 12 V or 24 V.

What this model does - and what it does not
This is the non-sonar GPSMAP. It is a navigation and networking display: no sounder inside, but radar, NMEA 0183 and a 10 to 32 V supply all included. Figures from Garmin published specifications.

Not supported

- ✗No detailed charts includedWorldwide basemap only. Garmin Navionics+ or BlueChart g3 for UK and Ireland is a separate purchase - unlike the ECHOMAP UHD2 range, which ships with UK charts loaded.
- ✗No HDMI outputHDMI is on the GPSMAP 12x3 and 16x3 only. Video is composite in, not out.

What you get on a 7 inch screen
7 inch touchscreen
1024 x 600 WSVGA with a slim bezel and a small footprint, which makes it a straightforward retrofit into an existing cut-out.
A hub, not a sounder
Garmin Marine Network for radar, networked sonar and chart sharing, plus NMEA 2000, NMEA 0183 and J1939 for engines.
10 Hz multi-constellation GNSS
GPS, GLONASS and Galileo with WAAS differential, for accurate positioning and smooth speed and course over ground.
12 V or 24 V
A 10 to 32 Vdc input range, so it drops into a 24 V boat without a converter.
Reading a Garmin model number
Garmin naming looks impenetrable until someone shows you the pattern. Once you can read it, the whole range makes sense in about ten seconds.

Screen size in inches. The x3 range runs 7, 9, 12 and 16 inch, so a 723 and a 923 are the same plotter at two sizes.

The series marker. Every model in this generation ends 23 - 723, 923, 1223, 1623. It is not a cartography code, which is where GPSMAP naming differs from ECHOMAP.
No suffix after the number is the part that matters here: it means no built-in sounder. Add xsv and you get Ultra High-Definition ClearVü and SideVü plus traditional CHIRP. Naming as published by Garmin for part 010-02365-00.

Fitting it
- Tilt mount with quick-release cradle supplied - drill four 3 mm pilot holes
- Flush mounting is supported, but the kit and template are a separate purchase
- Swivel base is not available for the 9 inch model
- Allow clearance behind the panel for the cradle and connector bundle
- Cut from the template supplied with the flush kit, not from the device dimensions
NMEA 2000 basics
- Linear backbone with T-connectors, one drop cable per device
- A 120 ohm terminator at each end - the most common DIY mistake
- Drop cables 6 m maximum; backbone 100 m maximum
- Power the network from the ignition or a switch, never straight off the battery
- 1 LEN = 50 mA, so a chartplotter at LEN 1 barely loads the bus

The three questions we get asked every time
Three questions come up on the phone almost every week. Here is what we tell our customers.
Why is it sold without a transducer?
Because the UK models we stock are display-only - and because for most of our customers that is the right answer anyway.
- The bundled transducer on overseas versions is nearly always a transom mount, which lifts clear of the water the moment a yacht heels
- Many boats already have depth on the NMEA 2000 bus from existing instruments - the plotter simply reads it
- An existing Garmin transducer can often be reused with an adapter cable
- Buying the display bare and pairing it with a through-hull is a better install, not a compromise
Which transducer, and where does it go?
Three fittings, and the right one depends far more on your hull than on the display in front of it.
- Transom mount - the simplest to fit, no hole in the hull, adjustable afterwards. Unsuitable for a yacht that heels; vulnerable on a drying mooring
- Through-hull - best signal and best at speed, the standard answer for a keelboat. Needs a haul-out, and usually a fairing block on a deep-V or sailing hull
- In-hull - no hull penetration, fits afloat, nothing to snag. Only works through solid GRP, never through a cored laminate, steel or aluminium, and you lose some sensitivity
Which models come with UK charts?
This is the question that catches people out, because the two Garmin ranges answer it differently.
- ECHOMAP UHD2 - Garmin Navionics+ for UK and Ireland is already loaded, with a year of daily updates. Nothing else to buy before your first trip
- GPSMAP - a worldwide basemap only. That is a coarse global outline, so a Garmin Navionics+ or BlueChart g3 card is needed as well as the display
- Vision+ is the optional step up on either range: it adds relief shading, satellite and aerial harbour imagery and 3D views
- Charts keep working when a subscription lapses - you stop receiving updates, you do not lose the cartography

Return goods purchased in-store
Simply bring your order confirmation or delivery note and the item you wish to return or exchange, unused and in its original packaging, to our till point in the shop. If you paid by debit or credit card, please ensure you also bring the payment card you originally used to buy the item/s.
Return goods bought online
1. Start your return through the Returns Process in your Fox’s Chandlery online customer account within 90 days of delivery.
2. Once approved, you will receive a Return Authorisation Number (RAN) and shipping instructions.
3. Package the item securely in its original packaging – please do not apply labels or tape directly to the product packaging.
4. Use a tracked courier service and always obtain proof of postage.
5. Please allow up to 14 working days after we receive the goods for your return to be processed.
