Anchoring and Mooring

Anchoring and mooring is a system, not a single purchase. The anchor sets the hold, the chain gives weight and chafe resistance, the snubber absorbs the shock loads that wake everyone at three in the morning, and the fenders and lines decide whether the boat looks after itself alongside. Frequently asked questions
How much scope should I let out when anchoring?
As a working rule: at least 4:1 chain in settled conditions and 5:1 or more when it pipes up - and remember to count height of tide and bow roller height in the depth, not just the sounder reading. More scope is the cheapest holding upgrade there is.
How many fenders does my boat need, and what size?
A common guide is one fender per 3 metres of length with a minimum of three a side, sized so the fender diameter is roughly one inch per metre of boat. Carry more than you think: rafting up, locking through and an unexpected finger berth all need fenders you did not plan for.
What does a mooring snubber or compensator do?
It absorbs the shock loading that all-chain rode and tight mooring lines transmit straight into the boat and its fittings. On an anchor it stops the chain snatching and helps it hold; alongside it takes the jerk out of a surging berth. It also makes the boat far quieter to sleep aboard.
