What is the difference between true and apparent wind?

Apparent wind is what the sensor measures on a moving boat - the combination of true wind and the wind created by your motion. Instruments calculate true wind by combining apparent wind with boat speed data.

Are wireless wind instruments any good?

Modern wireless masthead units are reliable and hugely simplify installation - there's no cable to run down the mast, which also makes them popular on boats where the mast is unstepped regularly.

Will a new wind instrument work with my existing electronics?

If both support NMEA 2000 (or the maker's own bus, like SeaTalkNG), yes - the wind data becomes available to compatible plotters, displays and autopilots on the network. Check the connection type before buying.
