Fuel Filters

Clean fuel is the difference between an engine that starts and one that strands you. This collection covers marine fuel filters for petrol and diesel engines: primary fuel filter and water separator assemblies, replacement filter elements, in-line filters for outboards and the fittings to plumb them - covering the popular engine makes and filter systems.

Diesel systems in particular deserve a proper primary filter with a clear water-separator bowl: water and diesel bug settle where you can see and drain them before they reach the engine. Change elements at least annually or per your engine schedule, carry spares aboard - a blocked filter offshore is only a problem if you can't swap it - and check the bowl for water regularly, especially after taking on fuel somewhere unfamiliar.

Frequently asked questions

How often should marine fuel filters be changed?

At least annually or per the engine maker's hours schedule - and immediately if the engine hunts, loses power or the separator bowl shows heavy contamination. Always carry at least one spare element.

What does a fuel water separator do?

It slows the fuel flow so water and debris settle into a bowl below the element, where they can be drained off - protecting injectors and carburettors from the water that condenses in every fuel tank.

Why does my diesel keep blocking filters?

Recurring blockages usually mean diesel bug - microbial growth in the tank. Treat the tank with a biocide, drain settled water, and in bad cases have the fuel polished or the tank cleaned.
