Accurate wind data changes how you sail - from trimming efficiently to reefing at the right moment. Our wind instrument collection covers masthead wind sensors, analogue and digital wind speed and direction displays, complete instrument packs and wireless wind systems that avoid running cables down the mast, from leading marine electronics brands.
Most modern wind instruments network with your other electronics over NMEA 2000, putting true and apparent wind alongside speed and depth at the helm and feeding your autopilot's wind-steering modes. When choosing, consider display readability from the helm, whether you want a wired or wireless masthead unit, and compatibility with your existing instruments - tell us what's already on board and we'll confirm what fits.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between true and apparent wind?
Apparent wind is what the sensor measures on a moving boat - the combination of true wind and the wind created by your motion. Instruments calculate true wind by combining apparent wind with boat speed data.
Are wireless wind instruments any good?
Modern wireless masthead units are reliable and hugely simplify installation - there's no cable to run down the mast, which also makes them popular on boats where the mast is unstepped regularly.
Will a new wind instrument work with my existing electronics?
If both support NMEA 2000 (or the maker's own bus, like SeaTalkNG), yes - the wind data becomes available to compatible plotters, displays and autopilots on the network. Check the connection type before buying.
