Bilge Pumps

Every boat needs a working bilge pump - most need two. This collection covers electric submersible bilge pumps in a full range of capacities, automatic pumps with built-in sensing, manual diaphragm pumps for backup and high-capacity emergencies, float switches, and the hoses, strainers and spares to install and maintain them.

Size your main electric pump to your boat with a healthy margin - quoted capacities are open-flow figures and real installed output is always lower once hose runs and lift are accounted for. Pair it with a float switch for automatic operation, and back it up with a manual pump that works when the batteries don't. Test your bilge system regularly: it's the cheapest insurance on board.

Frequently asked questions

What size bilge pump do I need?

Choose a pump whose rated capacity comfortably exceeds your realistic needs - installed output can be 30-50% below the open-flow rating once hose length and lift are factored in. Most small cruisers fit a 500-1100 GPH electric pump plus a manual backup.

Do I need an automatic bilge pump?

An automatic pump or a float switch paired with your pump means water is dealt with even when you're not aboard - strongly recommended for any boat kept afloat on a mooring or marina berth.

Why does my bilge pump run but move no water?

Usually a blocked strainer, an airlock in the hose, or a stuck non-return valve. Check the strainer first, then the hose run - and replace the pump impeller or cartridge if flow remains poor.
