What this model does - and what it does not
This is an earlier generation than the UHD2 range and Garmin now files it under Previous Models. Everything below is still from Garmin's own published specification for this part number.

Not supported
- ✗No NMEA 2000Garmin's Networking and Connections list for this model has no NMEA 2000 row, and the 40-series connector view shows only power and transducer connections. It will not join an NMEA 2000 backbone, so it cannot read engine, tank or wind data from one.
- ✗Not an autopilot controllerGarmin states plainly that autopilot control is only available on models with NMEA 2000 network capabilities. This model has none, so it cannot steer the boat.
- ✗No radar, no Marine NetworkGarmin Marine Network ports: None. There is no way to add radar or a networked sonar module.
- ✗No video input or outputGarmin lists both as None. No camera of any kind.
- ✗No transducer suppliedGarmin's own variant name is ECHOMAP Plus 45cv without Transducer. The 4-pin sounder to 8-pin transducer adapter cable is in the box, but the transducer is not.
- ✗No Wi-Fi and no ActiveCaptainGarmin's manual states Wi-Fi is not available on ECHOMAP Plus 40 models, and ActiveCaptain is restricted to the 60, 70 and 90 series. Chart and software updates go through a card and a computer.
- ✗ClearVü only, not SideVüThis is a cv model. Garmin's sonar-type selector for this part number reads ClearVü and Traditional CHIRP - the Ultra High-Def and SideVü options are different part numbers.
- ✗An earlier generationGarmin lists this under Previous Models and its last software release was September 2021. It is still supplied and supported, but the UHD2 range is where development has moved.

BlueChart cartography for the British Isles in their entirety plus the coast from Brest to Kiel, already on the unit. Nothing else to buy before the first trip.
Keys, not glass
Physical keys throughout. It works with cold wet hands and it does not need looking at to operate.
CHIRP and ClearVü
Traditional CHIRP for depth and bottom type, ClearVü for a photograph-like view of what is directly beneath the boat.
Small enough to go anywhere
4.3 inches and 0.7 kg on a quick-release cradle. It fits a tender, a RIB or a crowded small-boat console, and lifts off when you leave.
Which of these sonars will you actually use?
We sell to more cruising sailors than anglers, so here is the honest version rather than the tournament-fishing version.
Traditional CHIRP
Sweeps a range of frequencies in one transmission rather than pinging a single note, which separates targets far more cleanly. This is your depth sounder - water under the keel, and a read on whether the bottom is sand, weed or rock.
Garmin ClearVü
Down-scanning. A thin fore-and-aft slice directly under the hull, rendered almost photographically. Good for picking out a wreck, a mooring block or the edge of a weed bed as you pass over it.
Garmin SideVü
Images a swath of seabed out to port and starboard. Needs slow, straight, steady running to give a clean picture. Genuinely handy hunting for a lost mooring chain; less so on passage.
Ultra High-Definition
Not a fourth sonar - it is ClearVü and SideVü run at higher frequencies. The usual trade applies: more detail, less depth. Designed around shallow, clear inshore water.

Fitting it
- Tilt mount with quick-release cradle supplied - drill four 3 mm pilot holes
- Flush mounting is supported, but the kit and template are a separate purchase
- Swivel base is not available for the 9 inch model
- Allow clearance behind the panel for the cradle and connector bundle
- Cut from the template supplied with the flush kit, not from the device dimensions
NMEA 2000 basics
- Linear backbone with T-connectors, one drop cable per device
- A 120 ohm terminator at each end - the most common DIY mistake
- Drop cables 6 m maximum; backbone 100 m maximum
- Power the network from the ignition or a switch, never straight off the battery
- 1 LEN = 50 mA, so a chartplotter at LEN 1 barely loads the bus

The three questions we get asked every time
Three questions come up on the phone almost every week. Here is what we tell our customers.
Why is it sold without a transducer?
Because the UK models we stock are display-only - and because for most of our customers that is the right answer anyway.
- The bundled transducer on overseas versions is nearly always a transom mount, which lifts clear of the water the moment a yacht heels
- Many boats already have depth on the NMEA 2000 bus from existing instruments - the plotter simply reads it
- An existing Garmin transducer can often be reused with an adapter cable
- Buying the display bare and pairing it with a through-hull is a better install, not a compromise
Which transducer, and where does it go?
Three fittings, and the right one depends far more on your hull than on the display in front of it.
- Transom mount - the simplest to fit, no hole in the hull, adjustable afterwards. Unsuitable for a yacht that heels; vulnerable on a drying mooring
- Through-hull - best signal and best at speed, the standard answer for a keelboat. Needs a haul-out, and usually a fairing block on a deep-V or sailing hull
- In-hull - no hull penetration, fits afloat, nothing to snag. Only works through solid GRP, never through a cored laminate, steel or aluminium, and you lose some sensitivity
Which models come with UK charts?
This is the question that catches people out, because the two Garmin ranges answer it differently.
- ECHOMAP UHD2 - Garmin Navionics+ for UK and Ireland is already loaded, with a year of daily updates. Nothing else to buy before your first trip
- GPSMAP - a worldwide basemap only. That is a coarse global outline, so a Garmin Navionics+ or BlueChart g3 card is needed as well as the display
- Vision+ is the optional step up on either range: it adds relief shading, satellite and aerial harbour imagery and 3D views
- Charts keep working when a subscription lapses - you stop receiving updates, you do not lose the cartography

Simply bring your order confirmation or delivery note and the item you wish to return or exchange, unused and in its original packaging, to our till point in the shop. If you paid by debit or credit card, please ensure you also bring the payment card you originally used to buy the item/s.

1. Start your return through the Returns Process in your Fox’s Chandlery online customer account within 90 days of delivery.
2. Once approved, you will receive a Return Authorisation Number (RAN) and shipping instructions.
3. Package the item securely in its original packaging – please do not apply labels or tape directly to the product packaging.
4. Use a tracked courier service and always obtain proof of postage.
5. Please allow up to 14 working days after we receive the goods for your return to be processed.
