Choose by buoyancy rating: 50N buoyancy aids suit dinghy sailing and paddle sports where you can swim to safety; 150N life jackets are the standard for coastal sailing; 275N jackets suit offshore use and heavy weather clothing. Check the cylinder and firing mechanism at the start of every season and after any inflation, and have the jacket professionally serviced according to the manufacturer's schedule - typically every one to two years.
